Hi, I’m Gugulethu! Or Gugs, as everyone calls me. I’m based in Johannesburg, and I’m an award-winning writer, broadcaster, editor, and author. I’m passionate about using my voice to make a difference in the world.
I’m currently the Contributing Editor for Global Citizen and a presenter on Talk Radio 702, where I get to share my thoughts on the issues that matter to me and my community. I love conversations, whether it’s on air or through public speaking events or moderating panels, and I’m always looking for ways to broaden my horizons and learn from others. I bring this professionalism, warmth and curiosity to my role as an MC and facilitator.
I’ve had the privilege of working in a variety of media roles, including as the former host of NightTalk on Radio 702 and Breaking Dawn on Newzroom Afrika. I was also previously the Deputy Editor for BONA Magazine. I’ve also written for publications like Marie Claire, Financial Times, Mail & Guardian, Destiny Magazine, Cosmo SA, and W24. I am an accomplished creative consultant, having worked with clients such as Beiersdorf and Unilever, as well as having worked on two international festival events for Global Citizen in 2021 and 2022.
I’m also the author of a non-fiction book called; You Have Struck A Rock: Women fighting for their power, and I’ve contributed to several anthologies like Feminism Is and What if there were no whites’.
As Gogo Mpendulo Mkhaliphi, I am also a fully qualified sangoma/traditional healer. In addition to my comprehensive training as a sangoma, I am a registered traditional health practitioner operating with a Traditional Primary Health Care training certificate and practising number from the Traditional Organisation of South Africa.
